The Convention on the rights of the child has become the pillar of international collaboration to promote the protection of children and to safeguard their well-being. Through the department for children's rights (Service des Droits de l’enfant), the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth coordinates the implementation of the International convention on the rights of the child between the various ministries, institutions and bodies responsible for children's rights. A national action plan is currently in development.
The department for children's rights also participates in inter-ministerial consultations and in the work of international bodies that follow up on international conventions ratified by Luxembourg and the exchange of good practices, which can be transposed at national level.
In partnership with private organisations it develops guidelines, reference documents, actions and awareness-raising campaigns.
Its action is based on the 4 fundamental principles of the Convention on the rights of the child :
- non-discrimination ;
- best interests of the child ;
- right to survival and development ;
- right to participation.
