digiClass – digital learning with iPads in Luxembourgish secondary schools

digiClass is the framework through which public secondary schools integrate iPads into teaching and learning. It offers several models, enabling each school to choose the approach best suited to its educational mission and concept.

The use of iPads is not an end in itself. Tablets are used to support learning, cooperation, creativity, organisation and the development of pupils’ digital skills. Each secondary school can select the digiClass model that best meets its educational objectives.

Today, the digiClass scheme comprises three different models: iShare, iClass and myDevice. The former one2one programme is being phased out step by step.

iShare – shared devices for educational activities

The iShare model is based on iPads owned by the secondary school and made available to pupils during lessons for specific educational activities.

Key features:

  • devices shared amongst pupils
  • no tablets assigned to individual pupils
  • fully funded by the school
  • enhanced management and educational restrictions
  • selective use of iPads according to the school’s educational needs

This model promotes a collaborative and targeted use of digital media in the classroom.

iClass – an individual device provided by the school

The iClass model enables a more intensive integration of digital media into learning. Each pupil has their own iPad that can be used both at school and at home.

This model is based on a loan agreement between the school and the pupil. The tablet is provided free of charge but remains the property of the school for the duration of the scheme.

Key features:

  • one personal iPad per pupil
  • use at school and at home
  • device provided free of charge
  • tablet remains the property of the school
  • strong centralised management via Mobile Device Management (MDM)
  • daily use of iPads in teaching activities

The tablet must be returned when the pupil leaves the scheme or when the loan agreement expires.

myDevice – a personal device as part of a subsidised programme

The myDevice model combines educational use of tablets with personal ownership of the device. Each pupil receives a standardised iPad and participates in its funding through a reduced contribution spread over several years.

Key features:

  • an iPad allocated individually to each pupil
  • purchase subsidised by the Ministry
  • standardised device for all participating classes
  • greater autonomy in using the tablet
  • streamlined educational management via Mobile Device Management (MDM)
  • gradual acquisition of ownership of the iPad

The Ministry supports pupils in acquiring a personal iPad for educational use.

one2one – the former individual programme

The one2one programme was the first national initiative to integrate iPads into secondary education. Each pupil was provided with a personal tablet for use at school and at home under a rental agreement.

One vision, several approaches

All digiClass models share a common objective: to enable pupils to develop their digital skills and use technology responsibly, critically and effectively throughout their school career.

Whether the devices are shared, provided by the school or acquired through a subsidised programme, digiClass offers schools the flexibility to choose the model best suited to their teaching concept, whilst ensuring equitable access to digital learning tools.
