The Lycée de Garçons Esch (LGE) is expanding its school offer by adding, starting at the beginning of the school year 2020-2021, classes preparing for the International Baccalaureate (IB) in English.
The LGE thus becomes the first educational institution to offer this type of English-speaking classes in the southern part of the country, in addition to the offers of the Athénée (AL), the International School Luxembourg (ISL) and the private school Over the Rainbow - all three based in Luxembourg city. The new classes also contribute to the diversification in public education, which remains a government priority in order to respond to the growing heterogeneity of pupils.
International Baccalaureate courses are available in more than 5,000 schools in 158 countries around the world and the certificate is recognised by Luxembourg law as equivalent to the diplôme de fin d’études secondaires (secondary school leaving certificate). The International Baccalaureate in English is aimed at students capable of following a high-level secondary education in this language and prepares them for higher education. With the exception of French and Luxembourgish, all subjects are taught in English.
Grades 7, 8 & 9: three preparatory classes from 2020-2021
The teaching leading to the International Baccalaureate comprises five preparatory years (grades 7 - 11) and two years of the International Baccalaureate syllabus itself (grades 12 & 13).
The first four preparatory years (grades 7-10) will be taught at LGE: grades 7, 8 and 9 from 2020-2021 and grade 10 from 2021-2022. The corresponding timetables can be viewed on the school's website: www.lge.lu.
Admission and enrolment
Students interested in enrolling at an LGE preparatory class must have an excellent command of the English language, submit a portfolio and pass admission tests.
The portfolio including the student's personal productions and documenting the student's skills must be submitted by 26 June 2020 at the latest.
Depending on the class the student is aiming for, he/she will take a test in languages and mathematics on 6 July 2020:
- grade 7: English/Mathematics
- grade 8: English/Mathematics
- grade 9: English/French/Mathematics

Le LGE devient ainsi le premier établissement scolaire à offrir ce type de classes anglophones dans la région sud de pays, en complément des offres de l’Athénée (AL), de l’International School Luxembourg (ISL) et de l’école privée Over the Rainbow, toutes les trois à Luxembourg-Ville. Les nouvelles classes contribuent également à la diversification de l’offre scolaire publique qui reste une priorité du gouvernement pour répondre à l’hétérogénéité croissante des élèves.
Le bac international est offert par plus de 5 000 établissements scolaires dans 158 pays du monde et il est reconnu par la loi luxembourgeoise comme équivalent au diplôme de fin d’études secondaires. Le bac international en anglais s'adresse aux élèves capables de suivre un enseignement secondaire de haut niveau dans cette langue et prépare aux études supérieures. À l’exception du français et du luxembourgeois, toutes les disciplines sont enseignées en anglais.
Grade 7, 8 & 9 : trois classes préparatoires dès 2020-2021
La formation menant au bac international comprend cinq années préparatoires (grades 7 - 11) et deux années du programme du bac international proprement dit (grades 12 & 13).

Admission et inscription
Les élèves intéressés à s’inscrire dans une classe préparatoire au LGE doivent avoir une excellente maîtrise de la langue anglaise, soumettre un portfolio et réussir des tests d’admission.
Le portfolio comprenant des productions personnelles de l’élève et documentant les compétences de celui-ci doit être remis pour le 26 juin 2020 au plus tard.
En fonction de la classe visée, l’élève se soumet à un test en langues et en mathématiques le 6 juillet 2020 :
- grade 7: anglais/mathématiques
- grade 8: anglais/mathématiques
- grade 9: anglais/français/mathématiques
